Está situada a los pies del monte Iluntzar y con una latitud media del municipio de 1.181 pies, es la más alta de la comarca. Los barrios fueron tomando forma a partir del siglo X y, tal y como los conocemos ahora, cada uno en torno a su ermita: el barrio de Ikazurieta con su ermita de San Cristóbal; el barrio de Uribarri en torno a la ermita de San Miguel; la ermita de San Gregorio en el barrio de Merika; la ermita de Santiago en el barrio de Lekerika; y, por último, el barrio de Elexalde en torno a la iglesia de Santa María de Gorostiza. La gastronomía también marca la historia de Nabarniz, con su especialidad de alubias y, sobre todo, la menestra de verduras. Disfrute de estas especialidades en los restaurantes de la localidad.
Originalmente de estilo gótico (siglo XV), fue reconstruida en 1800, respetando la gran capilla y la torre que había a sus pies. Con Santa María de Bermeo, es el primer edificio centrado de Vizcaya.

San juan basque country

Few places on the Basque coast are as magical as the rock of Gaztelugatxe. The privileged location of the centenary hermitage defying the Cantabrian Sea, combines with the strength of nature, history and tradition; the result of all this, a place of fantasy is generated.
Also, from the viewpoint of Bakio, the Bakio-Matxitxako pedestrian path runs parallel to the coast and after two kilometers of extraordinary beauty leaves us at the gates of Gaztelugatxe (Urizarreta access).
From Bilbao, the journey takes about 45 minutes. The best way to get there is to take the BI-631 road, towards Loiu airport. Once you pass the town of Mungia (without entering the town center), you must take the BI-2101 road, towards Bakio, cross this town and head towards San Juan de Gaztelugatxe.
From Gernika, you must take the BI-2235 road, direction Bermeo. After passing this coastal town and without leaving this road, you must drive another 10 minutes until you reach Gaztelugatxe. In total, the trip takes approximately 1 hour.
