In 2010 the U.S. conglomerate Liberty Acquisition Holdings (which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange), took over PRISA and therefore El País.[18] Also in this period, Bank of America and Deutsche Bank became shareholders of PRISA. This fact contributed to a change in the political alignment of El País.
On May 12, 2018, El País announced the creation of the gender correspondent’s office, whose head will be Pilar Álvarez. The objective will be to «plan and improve coverage… on issues related to equality and women.»[37] The new office will also be in charge of the gender correspondent’s office.
At its foundation, it was defined as an independent newspaper, of quality, with a European vocation and defender of pluralist democracy, being considered a reference for both the left and the center-left. El País has shown an editorial line close to the PSOE, with social-democratic tendencies.[49] Since its acquisition by Grupo PRISA, it has undergone ideological changes, shifting from a socialist stance to a more socialist editorial line.

It was the first newspaper to take to the streets on the night of February 23, 1981 (the night of the 23-F coup d’état by Civil Guard lieutenant colonel Antonio Tejero), taking a clear stand and calling on citizens to demonstrate in favor of democracy.
In the international arena, El País has been characterized by a growing hostility towards popular democratic processes in Latin America -which it contemptuously calls «populisms»-, especially against Cuba, Venezuela and the ALBA countries.

the newspaper

After about an hour of Metro and walking a few minutes in the rain we arrived at the building where the famous newspaper is created. At first we visited the place where the newspaper «Cinco Días» is made, which is a newspaper that talks about politics and economy, and is usually read by politicians, businessmen and people who may be interested in these topics.
Next, we saw the newsroom of «El País» which, unlike «Cinco Días», is a more open space, where many more people work and there are many more screens. The guide told us that the newspaper is produced two days before publication and that they make teams to distribute the work even though their computers are separated.
When we finished, we also saw the newspaper «As», which is a daily sports newspaper that publishes the latest sports news. We entered a room where they have breakfast and interview athletes. Nearby there was a bookshelf where all the editions of the newspaper since 1961 were displayed. On the ceiling were framed objects, signatures and photos of players.
